During the eighties, she starred in crime thriller the movie Black Widow and humorous film National Lampoon’s holiday comedy and appeared on the sitcom Alice, a television series inspired by the film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.

In the subsequent decade, she earned another best supporting actress nomination for her role in Lynch’s the movie Wild at Heart where she played the mom of her actual daughter the character played by Dern. A year later she obtained another nomination for her role in Rambling Rose, another movie which also starred her daughter.

“This was the picture that Princess Diana chose as her absolutely favorite, and she invited me and Laura to London for a royal premiere and a party in our honor,” Ladd said about the film Rambling Rose. “She positioned herself between us, taking our hands, with tears, viewing our performance.”

The 1990s included parts in the comedy Cemetery Club, a film reuniting her with Burstyn, Primary Colors, a political story, a satirical film, starring John Travolta and Payne’s Citizen Ruth, a dark comedy where she played the mother of Dern once more.
