There are "no arrangements" for American leader President Trump to confer with Russia's Putin "anytime soon", a White House official has stated.

This past week the US president said he and the Russian president would conduct negotiations in Hungary's capital within two weeks to examine the war in Ukraine.

A planning session between US Secretary of State Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was scheduled to occur recently - but the White House stated the two had had a "positive" call and that a meeting was not "needed".

The administration declined to provide any more details on why the talks had been delayed.

Previous Developments

Trump had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit during a call with the Russian leader, a just prior to meeting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the White House.

Some reports indicated his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "shouting match", with insiders suggesting Trump had pushed him to cede extensive regions of eastern Ukraine as part of a settlement with Russia.

Yet, on Monday the American president endorsed a ceasefire proposal supported by Ukraine and European leaders to freeze the hostilities on the current front line.

"Freeze the lines in its current state," he remarked.

Moscow has consistently objected against pausing the existing front lines.

The Russian government was only interested in "permanent resolution", Lavrov stated on this week, indicating that pausing conflict would only amount to a brief pause.

Political Perspectives

The "underlying reasons" of the hostilities needed to be addressed, Lavrov stated, using Russian diplomatic language for a range of maximalist demands that encompass the acceptance of complete Moscow control over the Donbas as well as the disarmament of the country – a impossible condition for Ukraine and its EU supporters.

Zelensky said talks regarding the current lines were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Russia was "taking all measures" to evade negotiations.

He additionally stated the sole subject that could cause Russia to "pay attention" was that of the provision of long-range weapons to the Ukrainian military.

Strategic Factors

Putin's unscheduled call with the US leader last Thursday preceded rumors that the United States was preparing to send long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine that could possibly hit Russian territory.

Zelensky said it was the missile discussion that had forced Russia to engage in discussion. The conversation concerning the missiles had turned out to be a "strong investment" in international relations", he commented.
