Australian Teen Charged for Allegedly Attaching Googly Eyes on ‘Cast in Blue’ Sculpture

The local council mentioned they could not remove the eyes without harming the artwork.

A young person from Australia has appeared in court after reportedly defacing a large art piece of a mythical creature by applying googly eyes to it.

The 19-year-old, 19 years old, participated remotely at the local court in the state of South Australia on that day, charged with a single charge of property damage.

In a statement at the moment of the recent event, the municipal authorities explained that surveillance video showed a person putting artificial eyes on the sculpture, which locals have dubbed the “Blue Blob”.

The accused made no plea and informed the court she was ill, as reported by media sources, with the magistrate advising her to secure a lawyer before her next court date in December.

The damaged sculpture following the googly eyes were taken off.

A day after the reported event, the city leader said that restoration to the popular community sculpture would be costly as the stickers could not be removed without harming the sculpture.

“This wilful damage to a valued public artwork is inappropriate and disrespectful,” Mayor Lynette Martin remarked in mid-September. “It is not innocent amusement, it is pricey - it is also disappointing to those people of our society who have embraced the Blue Blob.”

The mayor added the council would pursue the “significant” repair costs from those responsible for the vandalism.

When the artwork was first proposed, it received varied responses from the local community due to its price tag and appearance.

Costing A$136,000 ($89,000; £68,000), the artwork depicts a legendary giant animal, with the sculpture’s designers inspired by an prehistoric anteater-like marsupial discovered in nearby caverns that was “huge, slow-moving, and intriguing”.

Formal name vs. local name
The sculpture is its official name but residents called the piece the ‘Blue Blob’.
