Citizens have assembled throughout the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-conducted offensive on 7 October 2023, as negotiations advanced in the neighboring country over an end to the hostilities in Gaza.

The attack led to in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken away to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely most lethal day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.

Israel answered by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are seen as reliable by the UN and other global organizations.

"The bloodthirsty enemies have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister added on Tuesday.

He also promised to "achieve all the goals of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will never again pose a danger to Israel".

Memorial Events Across Israel

The government authorities delayed state memorials until mid-October - after the conclusion of the festive season - but events still occurred around the country on that day.

A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israelis killed in the Hamas attack was conducted in Tel Aviv. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was televised across Israeli broadcast stations.

A period earlier, a silent tribute was observed around the country.

Negotiation Talks in Egypt

Simultaneously, Israeli and Hamas representatives met in the North African Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to examine the provisions of the agreement.

A prominent delegate involved in the discussions indicated that an night meeting of mediated discussions began at 19:00 Cairo time.

The source said the earlier meeting ended without concrete outcomes, due to differences over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not resume combat after the first phase of the deal.

He added that the discussions are "challenging and have still not deliver any significant progress," but pointed out that mediators are making efforts to narrow the disparities between the two sides.

Critical Issues in Talks

  • An enduring truce
  • The exchange of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The removal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Arrangements for humanitarian aid distribution
  • Post-war governance of the region

Public Reaction

In the city's Hostages Square previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member lived through the attack on the Nova music festival, where hundreds were murdered and dozens more were abducted by Hamas fighters - explained: "Nowhere feels like home any longer and until every captive return not a single person will feel safe."

"Once we see all home once more, we can breathe again. Then we can commence rebuild," she concluded.

Near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people congregated to express their support for the loved ones of the captives. Israel says nearly fifty stay in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be alive.

Protester Atalia Regev stated: "We need do whatever arrangement needed for the abducted to be released. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be safe."

Surveys now consistently show that about seventy percent of Israeli citizens desire the war to end in return for the release of the hostages.

Palestinian Conditions

At the location of the gathering, those paying respects gathered to honor the dead.

From there, the boom of military attacks and artillery could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people indicated the heavy Israeli bombardment carried on.

In the main city, air and artillery strikes were reported in the dawn of Tuesday in the west side Tal al-Hawa, area and locality districts and in the eastern district of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.

"Once the dusk falls, the dread appears with it," relocated Gaza City resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, described.

"Me and my three children are afraid of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are resting together, holding each other, particularly my smallest child who rests his face on me the entire evening."

"Constantly we look at the news to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the conflict will resume to us."

Humanitarian Emergency

The healthcare center in the urban area said it had accepted the bodies of half dozen people by the midday, including several killed in an Israeli bombing in the south part area.

A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of the city indicated two more victims had been transported. An individual was died by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get help to the south, medical staff said.
