The Gunners' boss remains confident that his side can continue to cope with player absences following confirming that attacker Kai Havertz is not ready for a few more weeks.

Extended Absence for German Star

Havertz has been absent for months following an operation on his knee. Initially expected to return earlier in December, Arteta explained the player encountered a problem when stepping up his rehabilitation and was unable to move forward “to the next level.”

“We took lessons, and managed to assemble a group that is far more dependable and has more options,” stated the manager.

Selection Dilemma for Brentford Clash

This development presents a selection headache for the midweek fixture at the Emirates against Brentford. The manager needs to decide between continuing to use Mikel Merino, who scored playing out of position against Chelsea, or reinstating Viktor Gyökeres, who featured briefly after a fitness issue as a substitute. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus is also available following a lengthy absence.

Defensive Concerns Persist

Additional concerns surround defender William Saliba and attacker Leandro Trossard, who both missed the weekend encounter. Therefore, summer signings Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are likely to keep their places in the backline for the league leaders.

Arteta feels the substantial investment on reinforcements in the last transfer window has left Arsenal in a more robust situation to deal with such absences.

Greater Options Vital for Title Challenge

Questioned if more options was helping their championship push, Arteta was emphatic. “Yes, as this campaign has been worse in certain positions, and now the situation with the defence,” he continued.

“History has shown us that we have to use players in various roles, and they must be capable to perform various functions if we want to compete at this level. And the instance of Mikel is probably the prime illustration.”

Arteta's Support for Suffering Star

Addressing the complication noted by Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta offered further detail. “His recovery was progressing. He failed to advance to the subsequent stage and now it’s looking like we have overcome that hurdle.”

The manager conveyed his eagerness to welcome him back. “The team is keen to have him. Honestly, he is a footballer who, for me, I value highly for the qualities he offers to the team, but his mentality, his attitude. I see him suffer while sidelined.”

“His playing record is outstanding, he’s been always available, and I look forward to get him back involved on the pitch because I believe it’s going to be a huge lift.”
