In a recent appearance, actor Jude Law stated he “didn’t fear any repercussions” for playing the Russian leader in a cinematic adaptation. The movie, though, may align so closely with the mythologized version circulated by Russian state media that, domestically, it reads as a endorsement instead of a critique.

The Manufactured Superhero

For years, the Kremlin and its pop-culture machine have worked together to craft a tailor-made persona of the president. This character is an infallible strategist devoid of flaws, a former spy reframed as a Russian James Bond who consistently understands more than he reveals.

Cinematic Reinforcement

One recent example is a television show released last fall, helmed by a pro-government filmmaker. The protagonist is a fictional security officer selected by fate to “rescue” the nation from disorder. Although he is called Mikhail, the message is clear: the hero must be a known figure from the secret services.

International depictions often end up buttressing this same narrative instead of undercutting it. An adaptation inspired by a popular book aims to subvert the leader's mythology by framing him not as a cause but as a symptom, shifting the focus to the spin doctors surrounding him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

On screen, Putin is shown as having been picked by powerful oligarchs to steady the country because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. They visit him and all but beg him to take the top job. He replies is that he would rather govern from the background, desiring enduring influence.

This tale is a key piece of state propaganda: the cool, reluctant strategist shaped by destiny. In reality, none of this took place.

The Truth Behind the Selection

Nobody ever begged him to accept the role. The presidency was in essence a casting call with no shortage of contenders. At the centre to the selection stood an influential oligarch from the previous administration who expected to run the country de facto.

• His list featured several politicians, including a reformer subsequently assassinated and a security service director.
• According to an expert who studied his rise, the future president simply fitted the required parameters: loyal, from the intelligence world, and politically neutral.

Curiously, the move to framing him as a “spy” may in part have been triggered by Daniel Craig’s debut as James Bond. The grittier interpretation prompted Russian media and online audiences to make comparisons with their leader. Mashup posters swapping the actor's likeness with Putin’s appeared on Moscow streets, feeding the growing tendency to frame him as a local secret agent.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

Given the casting, an actor popular with viewers there, the Kremlin will not miss the chance to portray this choice as a minor diplomatic triumph. Its omission of mass protests, the political rivals, or prominent activists in the story, even though it includes the past decade, is a welcome aspect for state propaganda.

In Russian cinema, the president is frequently an all-powerful presence who remains unseen on screen. His influence is hinted at through photographs or orders from on high. Now, he finally acquires a recognizable face—one that may inadvertently echo the very myths it might seek to question.
