The Details Known Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Shooting

A minimum of 16 lives lost their lives and more than 40 were hurt when assailants fired on a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have called a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have announced the number of fatalities remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were transported to medical facilities.

The deceased are yet to be officially identified, but investigators think their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the victims who have been identified at this time.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the shooting, explaining they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, the Foreign Minister declared that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality in the incident, according to reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, many remain under care, with several in serious condition. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
