The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Song

The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure by Critical Role, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at several agonizing backstories for key figures including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.

All in all, the opening looks amazing. However, I felt that something was lost in the music selection.

The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition created by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the official score of that title, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental choice, and I believe that fans of the second campaign will appreciate its presence.

But for me, The series' intro fails to capture the hype and energy that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter the artist, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it only got better when cast member the performer wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in the later year.

Featuring vocals from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't even watched the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. This track that excites you before you start an episode of adventurous fun.

The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords for me. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its tone is a little off.

Of course, Critical Role has stated that the series will have some surprises and differences from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its intro appears as one of them.

This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or want a head start to get to know the characters of the second series, the actual play are available on the audio platform and YouTube.
