A extensive search and recovery operation is presently in progress in the Caribbean region for two missing sailing vessels carrying humanitarian supplies en route from the Mexican coast to Havana.

Military Rescue Operations Launched

Authorities in Mexico has dispatched navy personnel and search planes to search for the two vessels, which were carrying no fewer than nine crew members, according to a official statement.

The ships had been projected to arrive in the Cuban capital on the early part of the week, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no official word of their safe arrival, the statement clarified.

Context of Aid to the Nation

Cuba has leaned on aid convoys from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the nation endures multiple power outages across the country.

"Both skippers and their teams are experienced sailors, and each boat are outfitted with proper safety equipment and signalling equipment," a representative involved in the effort said.

The nine-person crew are nationals of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Officials said it has opened communications with maritime rescue coordination centres from each country along with their consular staff.

"We are working closely with the authorities and remain confident in the capability of the sailors to reach Havana safely," the statement continued.

Previous Aid Delivery

Just days before, the Cuban authorities warmly welcomed and officially received a different ship that had delivered a significant amount of humanitarian aid to the country.

That boat, dubbed "a new Granma" after the yacht in which Fidel Castro returned to Cuba to begin the Cuban Revolution in the mid-20th century, brought photovoltaic panels, drugs, infant formula, bicycles and foodstuffs.

Broader Geopolitical Context

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have primarily led efforts to deliver humanitarian aid to Cuba beginning in January, coinciding with the time a energy blockade on the Communist-run nation was initiated.

International organizations have since highlighted ""severe" lack of essential goods, with over 50,000 operations postponed in Cuba due to electricity supply constraints.

Diplomatic tensions have increased over the past months, with remarks from various leaders highlighting the complex nature of bilateral relations.

In response to certain proposals, a senior Cuban official declared that "the governance model of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Indications suggest that early stages of talks had begun, although their ongoing development remains uncertain.

The naval forces said it was pledged to using all of the resources at its command to discover the sailboats and ensure the safety of the people on board.

To date, there has been silence on the lost ships by the Cuban government.
